ESET NOD32 Antivirus Business Edition Achieves First Anti-Malware Certification for Mac Operating System From ICSA Labs
ICSA Labs has certified ESET NOD32 Antivirus Business Edition for use with the Mac Operating System. This is the first anti-malware product to receive Mac certification from ICSA Labs, an independent division of Verizon Business.
ICSA Labs awarded this designation – announced Wednesday (Jan. 26) at the Macworld 2011 conference – to ESET for anti-virus detection under ICSA Labs’ desktop/server anti-virus criteria, which is aimed at protecting end users from emerging and existing threats.
“The threat of spreading malware in a heterogeneous or mixed computing environment comprised of Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows PCs is a real security threat today,” said Andrew Hayter, anti-malcode program manager of ICSA Labs. ”That’s why ICSA Labs is now offering certification for anti-virus devices that operate on Mac systems, which affords high levels of protection for end users under both operating systems.”
Offering advanced security protection with an unobtrusive interface that runs in the background, ESET NOD32 Antivirus Business Edition for Mac OS X delivers real-time protection from attack and helps to facilitate compliance posture by providing up-to-date anti-malware protection for Mac, Windows and Linux platforms.
To earn this ICSA Labs’ certification, ESET NOD32 Antivirus Business Edition for Mac OS X had to successfully prevent end users from becoming infected by in-the-wild and other computer viruses during a rigorous testing process. During testing, the product also demonstrated its ability to protect individual desktops, laptops and/or servers of residential users and organizations from self-replicating malicious code infection. WatchGuard Lists Most Risky Web Apps
According to WatchGuard security researchers, the fastest growing threat to corporate networks is web-based social media applications. These applications can seriously compromise network security, expose sensitive data, and create productivity drains on employees.
There are many reasons why social media applications can pose risk to any size business. Here are a few:
- Productivity Loss: Various research organizations have reported that the United States loses billions of dollars a year due to lowered productivity, as a result of time sinks such as social media sites. Although social media sites can be used for collaboration and rich communications, IT administrators often lack the ability to manage and control business productivity web applications vis-a-vis gaming web applications.
- Data loss: With most US states enacting mandatory data breach disclosure laws, businesses are increasingly concerned about data leakage, whether accidental or malicious. Unfortunately, the attributes that make social media sites a fantastic communication medium also make them a potential risk for information and privacy leakage. By having application control capabilities, administrators reduce risks associated with accidental as well as malicious data loss. Read more
IBM to Introduce New Virtual Desktop Offering
IBM announced the Virtual Desktop for Smart Business, a new workforce mobility offering that provides anytime, anywhere access to personal desktops from mobile devices — including tablets, netbooks, laptops and thin clients.
The IBM Virtual Desktop allows Windows or Linux desktops to be hosted and managed centrally, thus lowering the cost and complexity of managing PC environments through rapid deployment of new applications, automatic software updates and reducing the need for help desk requests. The Virtual Desktop for Smart Business, which includes VERDE software from Virtual Bridges, can be deployed on a customer’s own infrastructure or through a Business Partner “private cloud” hosted environment.
“As IBM’s latest smarter work offering, the Virtual Desktop expands the time and place where people can access information, contribute ideas and support customers,” said Dan Cerutti, general manager, IBM Smart Business. “Together with our partners, we’re bringing the power of virtual computing to smaller companies seeking greater agility while freeing up critical IT resources.”
The IBM Virtual Desktop has self-configuring, self-managing and self-protecting features that enable easy installation and management, plus continuous backup and recovery. Whether visiting clients, checking inventory or making patient rounds at a hospital, the solution provides instant access to information, helping employees solve problems and speed decision-making.
“IBM continues to tackle the needs of smaller companies with powerful solutions that are easy to install, easy to manage and priced right,” said Ken Espiau, Operations Director, Northcom Technologies, an IBM Business Partner. “With IBM’s Virtual Desktop offering, there’s only one console, one system and one implementation to make managing desktops much easier. Our clients can realize benefits of cost savings from the desktop of up to 40% while we’re able to gain a recurring revenue stream on back end management.” Read more
PandaLabs Uncovers Alarming Statistics on Cyber-Crime Black Market
PandaLabs discovered a vast network selling stolen bank details along with other types of products in forums and more than 50 dedicated online stores. This is a rapidly growing industry and cyber-criminals are aiding and abetting each other’s efforts to steal personal information for financial profit. After posing as a cyber-criminal to infiltrate the network, PandaLabs made some alarming discoveries which are available in the full report here: http://press.pandasecurity.com/usa/press-room/panda-white-paper/.
The cyber-crime black market, which has traditionally centered on distributing bank and credit card details stolen from users around the world, diversified its business model in 2010, and now sells a much broader range of hacked confidential information including bank credentials, log-ins, passwords, fake credit cards and more. But as openly available as this information is, PandaLabs discovered that it can only be accessed by personally contacting the hackers who are promoting their information for sale on forums and in chat rooms.
Making the Sale
By having access to bank credentials, criminals can easily defraud any bank or credit card account long before the hack is discovered. Alarmingly, this data can be purchased for as little as $2 per card, but this level does not provide additional information or verification of the account balance available. If the buyer wants a guarantee for the available credit line or bank balance, the price increases to $80 for smaller bank balances and upwards of $700 to access accounts with a guaranteed balance of $82,000.
