Dolby Laboratories delivers a highly efficient end-to-end audio solution capable of providing full HD entertainment with 7.1 surround sound, as experienced in the cinema, to television, streaming media, and portable devices.

Dolby works closely with content creators to help establish the best audio possible on all five screens—cinema, television, PC, tablet, mobile device—important in an age in which consumers choose to experience entertainment where and when they want it.

“From the cinema to broadcast television to streaming media, the way people experience entertainment has evolved. There are more options than there were in the past. But today, consumers don’t have to sacrifice superb quality and high-fidelity sound due to smaller screen size or new delivery mode,” said Ramzi Haidamus, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Dolby Laboratories. “Dolby continues to innovate and reinvent entertainment to meet the demands of next-generation content by delivering significant improvements that enhance the experience regardless of medium. Dolby is committed to providing premium quality entertainment exactly as the content creator intended it to be experienced across devices and delivery platforms.”

Dolby technology is at the core of the entertainment ecosystem, delivering outstanding audio across all five screens without compromising content quality. The key in bringing the entertainment experience to the living room is Dolby Digital Plus, a flexible digital audio coding technology that delivers up to 7.1 channels of surround sound over a wide range of bit rates, ensuring optimized sound quality and efficiency for the available bandwidth. With Dolby Digital Plus, consumers can enjoy a cinematic audio entertainment experience virtually anywhere. Read more

Security Standoff in the Cloud?

April 28, 2011 · Filed Under Security Software, Software News · Comment

CA Technologies and the Ponemon Institute, an independent research firm specializing in privacy, data protection and information security policy, released a study that shows cloud providers and cloud consumers are not aligned on cloud security. Their conflicting views on focus, priority and responsibility suggest a pending security standoff between cloud providers and cloud users.

The study, “Security of Cloud Computing Providers,” indicates that cloud providers are more focused on delivering the benefits of cost and speed of deployment, the top two reasons cited for migrating to cloud computing. The majority of cloud providers (79 percent) allocate just 10 percent or less of IT resources to security or control-related activities. This result is consistent with the finding that less than half of the respondents agree or strongly agree that security is a priority.

“The focus on reduced cost and faster deployment may be sufficient for cloud providers now, but as organizations reach the point where increasingly sensitive data and applications are all that remains to migrate to the cloud, they will quickly reach an impasse,” said Mike Denning, general manager, Security, CA Technologies. “If the risk of breach outweighs potential cost savings and agility, we may reach a point of ‘cloud stall’—where cloud adoption slows or stops—until organizations believe cloud security is as good as or better than enterprise security.”

New iPhone App Gives Radiation Exposure Info

April 27, 2011 · Filed Under Software News · Comment

Flying somewhere and want to find out your exposure to galactic and solar radiation? A new update to an iPhone app will let you do that.

The $1.99 “SpaceWx” app provides real-time information about exposure to radiation from solar activity and other sources from space, starting at an altitude of 16,000 feet (5 kilometers). Exposure levels are broken down by altitude and latitude, with the highest exposures typically occurring higher and farther north.

The new radiation function of the app is aimed primarily at airline pilots, flight crews and passengers.

“Aviation occupational radiation exposure currently is not consistently monitored, measured or quantified,” said Dr. Chris Mertens, a senior scientist at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va. “This is the first model of its type to do that.”

Space Environment Technologies Inc. in Pacific Palisades, Calif., developed the space radiation app under the guidance of Mertens, principal investigator for the Nowcast of Atmospheric Ionizing Radiation for Aviation Safety (NAIRAS) project. Read more

New iPhone App Aims to Help Children Improve Math Skills

Parents looking to help their children improve their math scores – whether in Kindergarten or high school – need look no further than their Apple iPhone or iPod Touch. A new app by Dr. Judith Bender, who holds a Ph.D. in applied math, a design firm, and a parent with a vision, makes learning math fun!

“The concept behind MathiGo is simple: math doesn’t have to be boring and can actually be addictive” says Dr. Judith Bender. “With so much to do in school today, children don’t have enough time to practice math and they rarely enjoy it. With the MathiGo app, learning math becomes engaging and less like work – more like a challenging video game. And like a video game, it becomes something you enjoy doing.”

For only $1.99, the app challenges players to test their skills at the basic math functions. Depending on the skill level chosen, the questions can be as easy as 2+2 or something that would make even a math teacher pause to think.

“MathiGo offers different game modes and levels to keep the child’s interest level high and frustration level to a minimum,” explains Bruce Popek, of Design Innovation. “The parent or child selects the game mode, level and addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. There are 10 skill levels to allow the child to progress at their own pace.” Read more

Norton Internet Security and Norton AntiVirus 2012 Public Betas Now Available

April 20, 2011 · Filed Under Security Software, Software News · Comment

Norton by Symantec released the 2012 beta versions of the award-winning Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security, which are now available for free download from the Norton beta website. The Norton 2012 betas improve on performance and protection in what are already the industry’s fastest and lightest security products. They include key security enhancements, including the ability to assess the safety and stability of an application before installation.

“As we’ve proven year after year, we are committed to arming consumers against cybercrime with the strongest protection possible, without slowing down their computers,” said Jens Meggers, vice president of engineering, for Norton products. “For the Norton 2012 release, our aim is to continue to raise the bar for both protection and performance.”

With the 2012 betas, Norton continues to deliver the strongest core protection technologies, without sacrificing performance. The betas feature Insight 3.0, the latest version of Norton’s exclusive reputation-based security technology, which leverages the anonymous software adoption patterns of millions of contributing Symantec users to automatically identify and block new malicious software. Download Insight, which checks every downloaded file for safety before it is allowed to run, has been updated this year to include information that lets users know if a downloaded application is likely to cause stability issues when they install it on their PC. Now Download Insight provides users with additional data they can rely on before installing an application, to decide whether to install that application or look for a similarly safe, yet more stable application. The betas also include upgraded SONAR 4.0 behavioral protection, which monitors running applications for suspicious behavior to quickly detect and disable previously unknown threats. Read more
