New IBM Analytics Technology Helps Clients Unlock Big Data
IBM announced a new analytics appliance that allows organizations to analyze up to 10 petabytes of data in a matter of minutes. The technology is designed to help industries uncover patterns and trends from large data sets while meeting compliance mandates.
The new IBM Netezza High Capacity Appliance addresses a growing challenge where organizations are amassing huge amounts of data. Banks, insurance companies, healthcare organizations and communications services providers are required by industry regulators to retain massive amounts of data – in some cases up to a decade. As data retention laws continue to evolve, organizations are faced with a unique challenge to store and analyze ever-expanding “big data” sets that may not be directly related to daily operations, yet still hold potential business value.
Using the new appliance, businesses can now more easily sift through petabytes of data including banking and mobile phone transactions, insurance claims, electronic medical records and sales information. Companies can also analyze this information to reveal new trends on consumer sentiment, product safety, and sales and marketing effectiveness.
IBM Netezza appliances are workload optimized systems based on IBM BladeCenter technology that analyze petabytes of data significantly faster than competing options, and at a much lower total cost of ownership. Read more

IBM Unveiled Breakthrough Software and New Services to Exploit Big Data
As companies seek to gain real-time insight from diverse types of data, IBM unveiled new software and services to help clients more effectively gain competitive insight, optimize infrastructure and better manage resources to address Internet-scale data. For the first time, organizations can integrate and analyze tens-of-petabytes of data in its native format and gain critical intelligence in sub-second response times.
IBM also announced a $100 million investment for continued research on technologies and services that will enable clients to manage and exploit data as it continues to grow in diversity, speed and volume. The initiative will focus on research to drive the future of massive scale analytics, through advancing software, systems and services capabilities.
The news comes on the heels of the 2011 IBM Global CIO Study where 83 percent of 3,000 CIOs surveyed said applying analytics and business intelligence to their IT operations is the most important element of their strategic growth plans over the next three to five years.
Today’s news further enables Smarter Computing innovations realized by designing systems that incorporate Big Data for better decision making, and optimized systems tuned to the task and managed in a cloud.
According to recent IT industry analyst reports, enterprise data growth over the next five years is estimated to increase by more than 650 percent. Eighty percent of this data is expected to be unstructured.
The new analytics capabilities pioneered by IBM Research will enable chief information officers (CIOs) to construct specific, fact-based financial and business models for their IT operations. Traditionally, CIOs have had to make decisions about their IT operations without the benefit of tools that can help interpret and model data.

IBM Introduces Software to Help Clients Reach New Mobile and Social Networks
New version of IBM’s Flagship WebSphere Software Supports applications from Mainframe to Mobile
At the IMPACT 2011 conference, IBM unveiled new software that will allow clients to develop, deploy and manage new types of applications spanning all major platforms from the mainframe to mobile devices. The ability to expand the reach of their applications will allow businesses to grow revenue and increase their customer base by taking advantage of new and developing markets such as mobile and cloud.
Key among the offerings is WebSphere Application Server (WAS) 8, new software that is designed to speed the development of applications and services. The new version of WAS increases a client’s security and control, and delivers automated enhancements for the installation, maintenance, testing and problem resolution of business applications.
Complimenting these capabilities are new features that extend the reach of WAS to support applications from the desktop to mobile devices through support for popular smart phones and tablets such as iPad, iPhone, Droid, BlackBerry and others. Support for these devices is critical to businesses as mobile applications constitute one of the today’s largest growth areas with one recent report estimating that the global mobile applications market should grow to $25 billion by 2015 (up from $6.8 billion in 2010).
