Interoperable e-mail messaging service launched with new version of Microsoft HealthVault enables physicians to share patient health information electronically.

During a Health & Human Services event in D.C. Microsoft Corp. announced new encrypted e-mail functionality for Microsoft HealthVault, which allows clinical partner solutions to send messages to patients based on security protocols set forth by the Office of the National Coordinator’s (ONC’s) Direct Project. Through this offering, every HealthVault record will be able to automatically accept mails directly from healthcare providers. Initial partners include MedPlus and VisionShare Inc., which have integrated the new service with their solutions to help clinical users secure messages they send to patients. The three companies are pioneering members of the Direct Project and will demonstrate the capabilities of their solutions in the Interoperability Showcase at the 2011 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibit (HIMSS 2011) as part of the Office of the National Coordinator’s exhibit.

“The initial goal of the Direct Project is to specify a simple, secure, scalable, standards-based way for participants to send authenticated, encrypted health information directly to known, trusted recipients over the Internet,” said Wes Rishel, vice president and distinguished analyst, Gartner. “It is exciting to see early, real-world examples of applications based on the Direct Project’s security protocols emerging through the efforts of the private sector. Through public-private partnerships such as these we are starting to see the sharing of critical information across the health system.” Read more

Trend Micro Completes Acquisition of Mobile Armor

February 3, 2011 · Filed Under Software News · Comment

Trend Micro announced that it has completed the acquisition of Mobile Armor as of close of business on February 1, 2011.

The acquisition agreement between Trend Micro and Mobile Armor was announced on November 29, 2010 and expands Trend Micro’s data protection portfolio, extending its encryption offerings to span from endpoints all the way into the public cloud.

The new Trend Micro Endpoint Encryption offering- formerly known as the Mobile Armor Data Armor Suite- delivers the broadest coverage of any solution in the market. One centrally managed encryption solution includes full disk and file/folder capability, delivers software-based encryption and support for self-encrypting drives, and covers PCs, Windows Smartphones and Removable Media.  In addition to this breadth of capability in a single solution, pre-defined policies make it simple to set policies while robust reporting readily proves compliance with those policies.

“We are pleased to complete the acquisition of Mobile Armor and welcome our new employees, partners, and customers to the Trend Micro family,” said Steve Quane, chief product officer at Trend Micro. “Trend Micro is helping government agencies, enterprise customers, SMBs and consumers around the globe protect their data whether stored on a local PC or mobile device or in a virtualized environment or public cloud.”

Trend Micro and Mobile Armor voluntarily notified and requested review of the acquisition by the US Government Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), and the CFIUS raised no objections to the transaction.  CFIUS is an inter-agency committee of the U.S. Government authorized to review transactions that could result in control of a U.S. business in order to determine the effect of such transactions on the national security of the United States. Chaired by the Secretary of the Treasury, CFIUS includes representatives from a number of U.S. Government departments and agencies, including the departments of Homeland Security, Commerce, Defense and State.

Accordingly, Trend Micro Endpoint Encryption is available to organizations around the world seeking to ensure the privacy of sensitive data on their corporate devices of all kinds.

IBM to Introduce New Virtual Desktop Offering

January 25, 2011 · Filed Under Productivity Software, Software News · Comment

IBM  announced the Virtual Desktop for Smart Business, a new workforce mobility offering that provides anytime, anywhere access to personal desktops from mobile devices — including tablets, netbooks, laptops and thin clients.

The IBM Virtual Desktop allows Windows or Linux desktops to be hosted and managed centrally, thus lowering the cost and complexity of managing PC environments through rapid deployment of new applications, automatic software updates and reducing the need for help desk requests. The Virtual Desktop for Smart Business, which includes VERDE software from Virtual Bridges, can be deployed on a customer’s own infrastructure or through a Business Partner “private cloud” hosted environment.

“As IBM’s latest smarter work offering, the Virtual Desktop expands the time and place where people can access information, contribute ideas and support customers,” said Dan Cerutti, general manager, IBM Smart Business. “Together with our partners, we’re bringing the power of virtual computing to smaller companies seeking greater agility while freeing up critical IT resources.”

The IBM Virtual Desktop has self-configuring, self-managing and self-protecting features that enable easy installation and management, plus continuous backup and recovery. Whether visiting clients, checking inventory or making patient rounds at a hospital, the solution provides instant access to information, helping employees solve problems and speed decision-making.

“IBM continues to tackle the needs of smaller companies with powerful solutions that are easy to install, easy to manage and priced right,” said Ken Espiau, Operations Director, Northcom Technologies, an IBM Business Partner. “With IBM’s Virtual Desktop offering, there’s only one console, one system and one implementation to make managing desktops much easier. Our clients can realize benefits of cost savings from the desktop of up to 40% while we’re able to gain a recurring revenue stream on back end management.” Read more
